Risk Factors and Prevalence of Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injuries in a Quaternary Care Center in Southern Thailand

Listen to this summary

The authors aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIs) in women undergoing vaginal delivery in Southern Thailand. They found a prevalence of 0.58% among 24,116 deliveries and identified five significant independent risk factors: nulliparity, forceps-assisted delivery, prolonged second stage of labor, higher birth weight, and gestational age of 37 weeks or more. The study highlights the importance of these factors in predicting OASIs and associated maternal morbidities.
