Risk factors for wound complications after second-degree tears or episiotomy - a secondary analysis of the REPAIR study

The authors aimed to identify risk factors for clinically relevant wound complications following second-degree perineal tears or episiotomy, as previous studies have primarily focused on obstetric anal sphincter injuries. They found that prolonged active second stage of labor, deep tears, and doctor involvement in suturing were associated with an increased risk of complications, while prophylactic antibiotics significantly reduced this risk. These findings suggest the need for targeted postpartum follow-up for women at higher risk of wound complications.
