Novel ex vivo models reveal segment-specific infection of the human efferent ducts and epididymis: implications for Zika virus persistence and shedding in semen

Listen to this summary

The authors aimed to determine whether the human epididymis and efferent ducts can support Zika virus (ZIKV) replication ex vivo and serve as reservoirs for prolonged viral shedding in semen. Their findings reveal that ZIKV exhibits segment-specific tropism, with sustained replication in the efferent duct epithelium and limited infection of epididymal stromal macrophages, highlighting these organs' roles in ZIKV persistence in human semen. This study provides a novel ex vivo model for further investigation of male reproductive tract-pathogen interactions and potential antiviral therapies.
