HPV-associated Cancer Diagnoses and Mortality in People With HIV in South Carolina During the Antiretroviral Therapy Era

The authors aimed to investigate whether individuals with HIV (PWH) and HPV-associated cancers (HACs) in South Carolina are diagnosed at younger ages, at more advanced stages, and experience higher mortality rates compared to those without HIV. The study found that PWH were diagnosed with HACs at younger ages and more frequently with specific cancers, such as anal, penile, and vulvar cancers, but overall cancer-related mortality did not increase for men with HIV, while women with HIV showed lower survival rates for oropharyngeal cancer. The authors suggest that HPV immunization and improved screening practices could help address disparities in HACs among PWH.
