Vaginal Oestrogen Therapy for Postmenopausal Women Undergoing Prolapse Surgery: A Multicentre Double-Blind Randomised Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial

The study aimed to determine whether vaginal oestrogen therapy improves outcomes for postmenopausal women undergoing prolapse surgery. Results indicated that women receiving vaginal oestrogen reported significantly greater subjective improvement in prolapse symptoms and better pelvic floor-related quality of life at 12 months compared to those receiving a placebo, although anatomical outcomes remained unchanged. The findings suggest that vaginal oestrogen could be considered as an adjunctive treatment option in the management of postmenopausal women undergoing primary prolapse surgery.
