Telemedicine Critical Care Billing For Hospitalized Medicare Fee-For-Service Beneficiaries, 2018-2024

The authors aimed to characterize telemedicine critical care (TCC) billing practices among hospitalized Medicare Fee-For-Service beneficiaries before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. They found that TCC billing increased from 0.002% pre-pandemic to 0.01% during and after the pandemic, with notable disparities in utilization based on hospital type and patient characteristics. The study highlights the need for further research to understand the clinical and economic implications of this billing trend.
