Acute Kidney Injury Induces Neurological Impairment Through Early Blood-Brain Barrier Disruption and Endothelial Transcytosis in Mice

This study investigates the mechanisms underlying neurological impairment associated with acute kidney injury (AKI) by examining blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption in a mouse model. The authors found that AKI leads to significant neurological deficits and increased BBB permeability, evidenced by cerebral extravasation of Evans blue and enhanced transcytosis of extracellular vesicles in cerebral endothelial cells. These findings suggest that early BBB disruption may play a critical role in the cognitive complications observed in AKI.
