Association Between In-Hospital Mortality and ICU Patient Volume at the Facility-Level Stratified by Severity

The authors aimed to investigate the relationship between ICU patient volume and in-hospital mortality, specifically stratified by the severity of illness as measured by Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores. Their findings indicate that while total ICU volume did not significantly impact mortality, higher volumes of patients with SOFA scores above 5 were associated with reduced in-hospital mortality, with this inverse relationship becoming more pronounced at higher severity levels.
