PROGRESS Study: Longitudinal analysis of antioxidant status and its relationship with heat shock proteins in children with chronic kidney disease

The authors aimed to investigate the longitudinal changes in antioxidant levels (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione) in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and their relationship with heat shock proteins (HSPs). They found that while antioxidant levels generally declined over time and showed some correlation with HSPs, only urinary catalase levels were modestly associated with better kidney function and lower risk of CKD progression. Overall, the study suggests that although altered antioxidant defenses are present in children with CKD, their predictive value for kidney outcomes is limited.
