Autonomic Alterations After Pulmonary Vein Isolation or Antiarrhythmic Drug Therapy

This study investigates the long-term autonomic changes following catheter ablation versus antiarrhythmic drug therapy in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. The authors found that patients undergoing cryoballoon ablation experienced significant alterations in heart rate variability and daily heart rates, which persisted over time, while those on antiarrhythmic drugs showed no such changes. The findings suggest that ablation leads to sustained autonomic modifications that may be linked to arrhythmia recurrence.
