Raising the bar on surgical site infection bundles: Preoperative penicillin allergy testing in gynecologic oncology patients with a reported penicillin allergy - A quality improvement study

Listen to this summary

The authors aimed to determine whether implementing preoperative penicillin allergy testing (PAT) could increase the use of cefazolin for surgical site infection (SSI) prophylaxis in gynecologic oncology patients with reported penicillin allergies. Their quality improvement study showed a significant increase in cefazolin use from 42% to 77.3% post-intervention, with a subsequent reduction in SSI rates to 0%. The findings suggest that routine PAT can enhance antibiotic stewardship and reduce the risk of SSIs in this patient population.
