There Is No One-Size-Fits-All: Surgical Approach Dictates Optimal Bearing Surface Configuration Choice in 30,000 Total Hip Arthroplasties Over 25 Years

Listen to this summary

The authors aimed to determine how surgical approach and bearing surface configuration influence the risk of dislocation in total hip arthroplasties (THAs). Their analysis of over 30,000 THAs revealed that the optimal bearing surface choice varies by surgical approach, with dual-mobility constructs reducing dislocation risk in posterior THAs, while flat/neutral polyethylene liners showed the lowest dislocation risk in antero-lateral THAs. The findings suggest that a tailored approach to bearing selection, rather than a uniform strategy, is essential for minimizing dislocation risk in THA.
