Ceftriaxone versus cefazolin plus gentamicin for antibiotic prophylaxis in Gustilo-Anderson type III open lower extremity fractures

The authors aimed to compare the rates of fracture-related infections (FRI) and other outcomes between ceftriaxone and a combination of cefazolin plus gentamicin for antibiotic prophylaxis in Gustilo-Anderson type III open lower extremity fractures. Their retrospective cohort study found no significant differences in FRI or complications between the two antibiotic regimens, while highlighting that the severity of the fracture and time to antibiotic administration were significant factors associated with higher infection risk.
