Expanded Culture Techniques Identify Uropathogens in "Contaminated" Cultures

This study aimed to investigate the discrepancies in urine culture results for asymptomatic pregnant patients whose samples were flagged as contaminated by clinical laboratories. By comparing standard urine cultures with enhanced culture techniques, the authors found that 16-21% of these "contaminated" samples actually contained clinically significant uropathogens. The findings suggest that improved culture methods may be necessary to accurately identify bacteriuria in this population.
