Heterogeneous Treatment Effects of Renal Replacement Therapy in Critically Ill Patients: A Multicenter Observational Study Using a Japanese ICU Registry

The authors aimed to determine the heterogeneous treatment effects of renal replacement therapy (RRT) in critically ill patients, specifically identifying which patient groups may benefit or be harmed by RRT. Their multicenter observational study found that, while RRT was generally associated with higher hospital mortality, certain subgroups—characterized by elevated serum creatinine, reduced urine output, and elevated blood urea nitrogen—showed potential mortality benefits.
