Early Engagement, Lasting Impact: Predictors of Scholarly Activity in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship Applicants

The authors aimed to investigate the relationship between the number of publications at the time of application for orthopaedic sports medicine fellowships and subsequent early career publication productivity, as well as to identify disparities in research output based on applicant characteristics. Their findings revealed that each additional publication at the time of application was associated with a 23% increase in future productivity, while disparities were noted between degree types and gender, with DO graduates and women producing fewer publications than their MD counterparts and male applicants, respectively. The study underscores the importance of early research engagement and highlights the need for equitable opportunities in scholarly activity.
