The authors investigate the role of Piezo2-expressing mechanosensitive neurons and enteric glial cells (EGCs) in the early activation of muscularis macrophages (mMfs) during postoperative ileus (POI). They demonstrate that these cells are activated shortly after intestinal manipulation, leading to mMf activation and inflammation through the release of signaling molecules Ccl4 and Cxcl10. The study highlights the importance of Piezo2 in initiating the inflammatory response associated with POI.
