Consumption of Fructose-Containing Food and Beverage Sources in Childhood Through to Adulthood and Risk of Hypertension: A Prospective Cohort Study

Listen to this summary

This study investigates the relationship between the consumption of fructose-containing foods and beverages, particularly sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and fruit juices, and the risk of developing hypertension from childhood to adulthood. The findings indicate that high intakes of SSBs and fruit juice are associated with an increased risk of hypertension, while whole fruit consumption does not show a similar association. The authors suggest that reducing SSB and fruit juice intake, starting in childhood, may help mitigate hypertension risk.
