Recalled Childhood and Familial Urinary Incontinence History as Correlates of Urinary Incontinence Occurrence, Severity, and Phenotype in Women: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Listen to this summary

This cross-sectional study of 849 adult women examined how recalled childhood urinary incontinence (UI), family history of UI, and other factors relate to the prevalence, severity, and type (phenotype) of adult UI. Overall prevalence was 42.6%, and recalled childhood UI, family history, older age, higher BMI, and vaginal delivery were independently associated with UI occurrence. Childhood and family UI history were also linked to greater severity and to urge, stress, and mixed UI, while vaginal delivery was specifically associated with stress UI.
