Late gadolinium enhancement in mitochondrial myopathy: a systematic review and meta-analysis of cardiovascular magnetic resonance studies

The authors aimed to determine the prevalence and distribution of late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) in patients with mitochondrial myopathy (MM) using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging. Their systematic review and meta-analysis of five studies revealed that approximately 20.72% of MM patients exhibited LGE, predominantly in the inferolateral region of the myocardium. These findings highlight the potential of CMR to detect subclinical cardiac involvement in MM, although further research is needed to understand the prognostic implications of LGE in this patient population.
