Primary care quality and secondary healthcare utilisation in patients with multimorbidity: a retrospective cohort study

This study investigates the relationship between the quality of primary care and the utilization of secondary healthcare services among patients with multimorbidity in England. The authors found that while higher attainment of quality indicators generally correlated with increased secondary care use, patients with complex multimorbidity who achieved higher scores on multimorbidity-specific quality indicators experienced lower odds of elective admissions and outpatient visits. The findings suggest that improving primary care quality may enhance management strategies for patients with multimorbidity.
