Measuring premenstrual disorders in adolescence: prevalence of premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual dysphoric disorder and psychometric validation of the PMS-I-Y in a German-speaking sample

This study investigates the prevalence of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) among German-speaking adolescents aged 14-18, as well as the psychometric validation of the PMS-I-Y questionnaire. The findings reveal that a significant portion of participants experience clinically relevant premenstrual symptoms, with 46.6% meeting criteria for moderate-to-severe PMS and 22.5% for PMDD. The PMS-I-Y demonstrates strong psychometric properties, although the authors caution that results may be influenced by retrospective self-reporting and sampling biases.
