Improving the Ambulatory General Internal Medicine Experience in Undergraduate Medical Education: a Call for Action

The authors aim to address the growing shortage of primary care physicians by exploring how to enhance the ambulatory general internal medicine (GIM) experience in undergraduate medical education (UME). They identify key challenges and opportunities within the primary care ecosystem, faculty engagement, and student experiences, proposing actionable strategies to foster student interest in primary care careers. This paper serves as a call to action for medical schools to improve UME GIM experiences through better clinical exposure, mentorship, and faculty support.
