Association of Mental Health, Quality of Life, and Sport Specialization Using the Wisconsin Sport Specialization Questionnaire Among Adolescent Athletes

Listen to this summary

The authors aimed to investigate the relationship between sport specialization, as measured by the Wisconsin Sport Specialization Questionnaire (WISSQ), and mental health and quality of life outcomes among uninjured adolescent athletes. Their findings revealed that higher levels of sport specialization were associated with increased depressive symptoms and pain interference, particularly among older adolescents, suggesting that specialized athletes may be at greater risk for mental health issues and could benefit from targeted screening.
