Comparison of Patellofemoral Degeneration After Three Types of High Tibial Osteotomy: Retrotuberosity Biplane Open-Wedge, Supratuberosity Biplane Open-Wedge, and Closed-Wedge Techniques

The authors aimed to compare the effects of three types of high tibial osteotomy—retrotuberosity biplane open-wedge (RTOWHTO), supratuberosity biplane open-wedge (STOWHTO), and closed-wedge (CWHTO)—on patellofemoral cartilage degeneration and related parameters. The study found that RTOWHTO had a significantly lower prevalence of femoral trochlear cartilage degeneration and less lateral patellar translation compared to STOWHTO, while also showing less reduction in patellar height than both STOWHTO and CWHTO. These results suggest that RTOWHTO may lead to more favorable outcomes for the patellofemoral joint.
