Body Composition in the General Population: Whole-body MRI-derived Reference Curves from Over 66 000 Individuals

Listen to this summary

The authors aimed to calculate age-, sex-, and height-normalized body composition (BC) metrics from MRI scans of over 66,000 individuals to assess their prognostic value for cardiometabolic outcomes beyond traditional risk factors. They found that specific BC z-scores were significantly associated with increased risks of diabetes, major adverse cardiovascular events, and all-cause mortality. An open-source z-score calculator was developed to facilitate the use of these metrics in clinical settings.
