Treatment status of iron medications for anemia in patients visiting gynecological or obstetric facilities: analyses using Japanese claims data.

Listen to this summary

This study examined how iron-deficiency anemia is currently treated in women aged 20-49 who visited gynecology or obstetrics facilities, using Japanese insurance claims data from 2018-2022. The authors found that oral iron was typically given for only about 4 weeks, IV iron doses were often below the calculated requirement (especially saccharated ferric oxide), and oral iron was frequently prescribed shortly after IV infusion despite guidance against it. They conclude that current treatment appears insufficient to replenish iron stores, and that women of reproductive age should receive more thorough treatment regardless of symptoms.
