Decomposing the rural-urban gap in overweight & obesity among reproductive age group women: a non-linear based fairlie decomposition analysis in indian context.

Listen to this summary

This study uses nationally representative NFHS-5 data to examine why overweight and obesity (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m²) is higher among urban than rural women of reproductive age (15-49) in India. Using a non-linear Fairlie decomposition, the authors find that about 74% of the rural-urban gap is explained by observed characteristics, with household wealth (36.77%), women's education (19.35%), and age (14.84%) as the largest contributors. The results point to socioeconomic advancement and demographic differences as the main drivers, supporting equity-focused strategies that address socioeconomic inequality alongside diet and physical activity promotion.
