Implementation of Relative Value Unit-Based Physician Compensation in Emergency Physicians: Operational Evidence From a National Group

The authors aimed to evaluate the impact of transitioning from hourly-based to relative value unit (RVU)-based compensation for emergency physicians on various operational metrics, including billing intensity and clinician productivity. Their analysis, based on data from 167 emergency departments over five years, found that this compensation model change did not significantly affect primary outcomes such as RVUs per patient or patients per hour, nor did it influence secondary outcomes related to clinician satisfaction or operational efficiency. Overall, the study suggests that the shift to RVU-based compensation did not yield measurable improvements in the evaluated metrics.
