Global Prevalence of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders: A Systematic Review and Modeling Study

Listen to this summary

The authors aimed to address the gap in epidemiological data regarding the global prevalence of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and related disorders. Through a systematic review and modeling study, they estimated the lifetime prevalence of OCD to be approximately 2.57% to 3.21% depending on the diagnostic criteria used, and found a negative correlation between OCD prevalence and the Socio-demographic Index, with prevalence peaking in young adulthood. The study highlights the importance of diagnostic definitions in understanding the epidemiology of these mental health disorders.
