Intestinal Ultrasound Scan in Acute Severe Ulcerative Colitis in children: a multicenter prospective study on behalf of the Porto IBD Working Group of ESPGHAN

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of intestinal ultrasound scans (IUS) in predicting short-term treatment outcomes for pediatric patients with acute severe ulcerative colitis (ASUC). The findings indicate that specific metrics from IUS, such as colonic wall thickness and Milan ultrasound criteria, can reliably forecast steroid resistance and the likelihood of requiring colectomy. Overall, the study suggests that IUS serves as a valuable noninvasive tool in managing ASUC in children.
