Preventing Opioid Misuse Through Safe Opioid Use Agreements in Surgery: A Randomized Clinical Trial
Listen to this summary
The authors aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of safe opioid use agreements in reducing the disposal of leftover prescription opioids among postoperative patients. In a randomized clinical trial involving 450 adult surgery patients, they found that only a small percentage disposed of unused opioids, and the use of opioid agreements did not significantly improve disposal rates or safe storage practices. These findings suggest that alternative strategies may be necessary to address the issue of postoperative opioid retention.
