Declining but persistent hepatocellular cancer risk beyond 10 years of entecavir or tenofovir in chronic hepatitis B: Results of the PAGE-B cohort

Listen to this summary

The authors aimed to assess the long-term outcomes, specifically the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and predictors of survival, in chronic hepatitis B patients treated with entecavir or tenofovir beyond ten years. Their findings indicate that while the cumulative incidence of HCC remains a concern, the incidence rate significantly declines after ten years of treatment. Additionally, the study highlights that HCC is a major determinant of mortality, and the rate of HBsAg loss increases after year ten, particularly in older and initially HBeAg-positive patients.
