Ophthalmic Artery versus Uterine Artery Doppler in the prediction of preterm pre-eclampsia at 11-13 weeks' gestation.

Listen to this summary

This prospective study of 946 women undergoing first-trimester screening asked whether maternal ophthalmic artery Doppler (Oph-PR) can match uterine artery Doppler (UtPI) for predicting preterm pre-eclampsia when added to maternal factors, mean arterial pressure, and PlGF. The two Doppler approaches performed comparably (AUCs of 0.805 to 0.837 for UtPI versus 0.789 to 0.830 for Oph-PR, with no significant difference), and combining both indices gave the highest accuracy (AUC 0.919). The authors conclude that Oph-PR is a viable alternative to UtPI, and that using both may improve preterm pre-eclampsia prediction, though only 21 women had preterm pre-eclampsia, which limits the strength of these findings.
