Mental Health Service use and Expenditures among Medicare Beneficiaries with Depression, Diabetes and Heart Disease after Cost-sharing Parity

The authors aimed to evaluate the impact of cost-sharing parity on the use of outpatient mental health services and out-of-pocket expenditures among Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 and older with depression and comorbid diabetes and/or heart disease. They found that after the implementation of parity, there was a significant increase in mental health service utilization without a corresponding rise in patient costs, particularly among those with multiple chronic conditions. This suggests that reducing financial barriers can enhance access to mental health care for vulnerable populations.
